Victimization of Complainant in Criminal Case: An Exploratory Study

Abstract
Victimization of complainants in criminal justice system prohibits legal initiatives of any crime that gradually gripping the attention of victimologists to ensure equal rights of victims. The principle aim of this study is to explore the nature of victimization of complainants during criminal case in trial stage. To fulfill this, the types of victimization as well as its causes and impact are also investigated. Quantitative research method is used here; that follows purposive sampling to collect data from 50 respondents. This study finds that the rate of victimization among female complainant (44%) is increasing; respondents from rural area (54%) are mostly victimized in trial than those of urban; complainants of violent cases are victimized mostly by different assaults (54%) and about 64% complainants become victimized twice. Besides, large number of respondents (72%) claimed that misuse of law is a cause of their victimization and the economic impact of such victimization (67%) is alarming. Gradually, these victimization of complainants decreases the public confidence over justice, which is unacceptable in a democratic country. So, it has become necessary for the government to take proper steps to eliminate victimization of complainants of criminal cases in Bangladesh.
